Gerrard responds when asked directly about Leeds interest in Rangers star player
Steven Gerrard has denied reports linking Leeds United with a move for Rangers defender Borna Barisic.
Football Insider reported that the 27-year-old appeared on the Whites’ shortlist after a recent meeting with Marcelo Bielsa at Elland Road.
Leeds were said to be in the market for a left-back, with the club having concerns over their strength-in-depth in that position.
Gerrard was asked if there was anything concrete in the reports linking Leeds with a move for the Croatian, to which his response was definitive.
“No,” he said. “Borna’s focused here, he’s signed a long contract.”
“He’s really settled, he’s in fantastic form and we’re delighted to have him.
“Nothing’s come to us in terms of that situation, but it’s no surprise.”
Barisic has been world-class at Ibrox ever since Gerrard arrived, and was in the running for the SPFL Player of the Year award last season.
The defender was involved in an impressive 16 goals in the 19/20 campaign, delivering 13 assists from left-back, something that will have caught Bielsa’s eye.
This shouldn’t come as any surprise though, with the Daily Record reporting that Barisic isn’t interested in a move away from Glasgow.
It is suggested that he is, instead, hell-bent on stopping Celtic from winning their tenth title in-a-row.
Left-back isn’t a massive priority for Leeds, with Stuart Dallas, Ezgjan Alioski and Barry Douglas all possible options, and Bielsa will be concentrating on the heart of his defence more, we suspect.
