Steve Nicol heaps praise on ‘impressive’ Leeds United midfielder Brenden Aaronson after star performance against Wolves

Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has heaped praise on Leeds United attacking midfielder Brenden Aaronson for his performance in the side’s 2-1 win against Wolves.

The USMNT international was the star performer for the Whites as the side came from a goal down to secure all three points at the Elland Road on Saturday.

Nicol, while talking on ESPN FC, stated that now, Aaronson should focus on producing similar kind of performances week in, week out for the club.

“I think the most impressive thing about arrangements was not that he was all over the park and he was closing the ball and he was winning it and he was giving it,” he said.

“We know that he can do all that stuff. I think the best part of his game was the fact that it was the way he delivered these passes, right, and the decision-making, not just with the ball at his feet, but again, choosing when to go and close down and choosing when to stay off.

“You talk about almost a complete performance because obviously scoring would have been the cherry on the top.

“The fact is that he’s now showing everybody at the Premier League level, he’s capable of showing himself to be the most important player on the field against the Wolves side, who have packed, by the way, with internationals, with experience.

“So he’s done it now what he has to do now is follow up and do it consistently. And of course, a big statement as well because we know how much Marsch wanted him in the side, that he wanted to bring him over.

“And people look at a guy with just the American connection, Tyler Adams obviously coming across as well, but that sort of performance reinforces the fact the manager’s decision was the correct one. Well, certainly for now.”

Brilliant start

Leeds United couldn’t have asked for a better start to their campaign while playing at home as they managed to win a fixture that they would’ve hoped for against a team who is expected to finish in the bottom half as well.

During the transfer window, there was a sense of feeling that manager Jesse Marsch is keener on bringing in players from the USMNT because of his American connection and Aaronson was one of them.

However, his performance on Saturday would give the fans and the pundit a lot to think about as he was simply outstanding in the fixture.

The 21-year-old was not only brilliant offensively but it was evident that he was willing to sacrifice for the team at a time when they needed him to defend as well.

It is those kinds of things which make the fans love a player and if Aaronson will be able to do that, he will soon become an Elland Road favourite.
