Stan Collymore: Marcelo Bielsa not doing enough to justify £8m-a-year deal at Leeds United

Stan Collymore claims Marcelo Bielsa’s new contract at Leeds United sees him earn a whopping £8million-a-year (£153,000-a-week).

Last week, the Whites announced on their website that Bielsa has agreed a new one-year deal at Elland Road.

After losing 5-1 to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday, Collymore has taken aim at Bielsa for not showing his worth by not being able to teach his teams to defend.

“Another season and already another set of excuses for Leeds under their untouchable manager Marcelo Bielsa,” said Collymore in the Mirror’s print edition [August 17, page 55].

“Yes, we know he got them promoted with players who were not anywhere near favourites to go up.

“Yes, we know several managers were inspired by his approach to fitness and being on the front foot as much as possible.

“And, yes, he is eccentric.

“But he is also on £8million a year and, for that, Leeds should be getting a manager whose side can attack and create but be pragmatic and defend when they need to as well.”

Is he having a laugh?

Leeds have lost 6-2 and 5-1 at Old Trafford since their return to the Premier League. Fair enough.

But they have also held Chelsea to a 0-0 draw, won 2-1 away at Manchester City and won 3-1 against Tottenham at Elland Road.

That’s a draw against the European champions, a win away at the Premier League champions and a routine win over a team boasting stars like Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

What about those, Stan?

Why is Collymore basing Bielsa’s wages on two results? Is he that dim?

Let’s face it, Stan has it in for Bielsa. Some people do and we get that.

Some people have an issue with others being put on a pedestal because ‘they don’t win enough silverware’.

Is Alan Shearer the best striker in Premier League history? He won it once. Or is Brian McClair because he won it more? What about Gabriel Jesus?

Why do people pick and choose when someone’s greatness is judged on silverware?

It’s yet again more anti-foreign bias from English pundits.

In other Leeds United news, a BT Sport pundit was blown away by what Bielsa did ahead of the Man United defeat.
