Stan Collymore hits back at Leeds United fan after what he said about Celtic
Stan Collymore has hit back at a Leeds United fan after he appeared to mock Celtic following their Premier Sports Cup victory over Rangers.
Collymore posted on X on 15 December celebrating Celtic’s 119 trophies, suggesting it makes them the most successful European club by silverware won, something one Leeds fan wasn’t having.
The ex-Premier League striker had taken to X to congratulate Celtic on their victory, but couldn’t resist taking a dig at the Whites and their status in the Championship.
Collymore said: “Bit rich coming from the world’s biggest football club to spend half of its existence in the second tier of English football.”
Leeds United can prove Stan Collymore wrong this season
As much as the Whites remain one of the biggest clubs in English and arguably European football, there’s no denying that their more successful periods have come very few and far between.
That’s certainly been the case in the 21st century, going from the Champions League semi-finals to League One within six years and spending just three years in the Premier League since.
Marcelo Bielsa’s awakening of the sleeping giant created a snowball effect which seemed certain to propel United back to the top end of the Premier League, but that star burned bright and burnt out.
The Whites are still paying for the mistakes of that three-year top-flight spell having failed to achieve an immediate return via last season’s Championship play-offs, with promotion a must this time around.
Pressure on Daniel Farke will only grow the longer United aren’t pulling well clear of the Championship play-off places, and establishing themselves as a Premier League club is the only way the club can stop the likes of Collymore aiming cheap shots at them.
In other Leeds news, Jon Newsome is staggered by how the Whites have handled one player’s current contractual situation.
