Southampton want to sign Cody Drameh in last-ditch summer deal from Leeds United – Fabrizio Romano

Southampton want to sign Cody Drameh from Leeds United in a last-ditch summer transfer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The journalist reported via his personal Twitter account on Friday (18 August) that Saints boss Russell Martin has identified the right-back as a target before the window closes.

Romano added that the manager is, however, prepared to wait until either January or next summer to sign the 21-year-old defender.

“Understand Southampton boss Russell Martin has identified long term target Cody Drameh as target in the closing weeks of the window,” Romano posted on Twitter.

“He’s prepared to wait until January and even next summer to sign the RB who’s deal expires in 2024.”

Bright future

Drameh has already enjoyed a fine career so far at the age of 21, with the youngster shining while temporarily away from Elland Road in recent seasons.

The right-back first impressed during a loan spell at Cardiff City in the 2021/22 campaign, before helping Luton Town gain promotion to the Premier League last time out.

Now he is back at Leeds, but his long-term future is up in the air amid interest from the likes of Championship rivals Southampton.

Many Leeds fans were perhaps expecting the 21-year-old to feature regularly under Daniel Farke following his time at Luton, but Drameh has been handed just one minute of action so far this season.

That came in the League Cup win over Shrewsbury Town, with the full-back not in the squad for the opening day league clash against Cardiff, while he watched on from the bench in the following match against Birmingham City.

In other Leeds United news, EFL protocol means one Whites man cannot play in their Championship clash against West Brom on Friday (18 August).
