Sources claim done deal: Mateusz Klich now DC United Designated Player after Leeds United exit
Mateusz Klich has completed his move from Leeds United to DC United in MLS and will be a Designated Player for the team, Tom Bogert reports.
The Polish international was given an emotional tribute on the Elland Road turf following the 2-2 draw with West Ham which proved to be his final appearance in a Whites shirt on 4 January.
The 32-year-old was in tears as he left the pitch for the final time having agreed an exit from the club in light of a lack of playing time under Jesse Marsch, and now joins Wayne Rooney’s side on the other side of the Atlantic.
MLS insider Bogert, who writes for The Guardian among others, reported on Twitter on Monday (9 January): “Sources: D.C. United have completed the signing of Poland international midfielder Mateusz Klich from Leeds United.
“Klich will be a Designated Player. Klich, 32, arrived in D.C. this week to finalize the move.
“He made 195 appearances with Leeds, where he was a fan favorite.”
End of an era
Klich was a fan-favourite, as much for the part he played in elevating the club back to the Premier League in Marcelo Bielsa’s side, which already feels a lifetime ago, as his accessible nature with the fans and on social media.
Had he been sure of a more sustained role in Marsch’s set up going forward no doubt he and the supporters would have gladly seen him end his career at Elland Road.
But his influence in the top flight wasn’t the same as it was in the Championship, and with younger options in the midfield and a new set up under the American, that wasn’t going to be the case.
Some might rightly argue it is as yet unclear quite what that set up actually is, as the chaos that tends to erupt in Leeds United games appears to throw tactics out the window for both sides fairly frequently.
But as a Designated Player in the US Klich will surely have a far more significant role to play, which could give him an outside chance of featuring for his national team again, and the Whites fanbase will certainly wish him well on that front.
In other Leeds United news, the club have been sparked into immediate negotiations after a “surge” of interest in a key youngster.
