Source close to situation at Elland Rd describes ‘Disgraceful’ stance by Leeds and player
Leeds United and goalkeeper Kiko Casilla have been branded as “disgraceful” with Jonathan Leko yet to receive an apology over being racially abused in September.
Last month, the FA hit Casilla, 33, with an eight-match ban for racially abusing West Brom forward Leko, 20, while he was on loan at Charlton.
Casilla maintained that he did not call Leko what he was accused of saying but even though the FA have made their judgement, he has not come out and apologised to the Baggies youngster.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, a source close to the situation at Elland Road has ripped into the Spanish goalkeeper – as well as the club – for their stance since the FA published their written findings.
“It’s disgraceful,” the source said. “You either accept the punishment and apologise, or you launch an appeal. Leeds have not appealed but they have not apologised. They can’t have it both ways. That they have still not seen fit to say sorry to Jonathan is deplorable.”
The Mail’s source is right. How can Leeds be so silent on the matter?
But the issue is, if an apology comes out now or a new statement by the club, then they’re only going to be blasted for taking so long.
If that happens then it will no doubt be them bowing down to pressure rather than there being any meaningful apology.
Leko has described how much the incident affected him and he even suggested he won’t report anything if a similar thing happens in the future.
That is the last thing you want to hear from a victim of racist abuse and the handling of this situation by Leeds has been puzzling, to say the least.
