‘Someone Leeds are interested in’ – Phil Hay details one transfer Orta could complete in January
Leeds United are set for a quiet January, certainly in terms of senior signings.
However, Athletic journalist Phil Hay thinks that Leeds could add to their burgeoning talent in the Under-23s and named Wigan’s Sean McGurk as a player who Victor Orta could bring in this window.
Talking on the Phil Hay Show podcast, Hay said, “The incomings are quiet and that’s what we expected.
“I never rule out Academy signings and Sean McGurk, the youngster at Wigan, he’s someone Leeds are interested in.
“Louie Sibley is another young prospect they admire that they’re keeping their eye on.”
The Sun reported in October that Leeds had a bid for McGurk rejected by the Wigan administrators last summer.
Future is very bright
Leeds are spending a lot of money on the Under-23s.
Sam Greenwood signed in the summer for £1.5m and Joe Gelhardt cost almost a million from Wigan. Cody Drameh also came in for a significant six-figure sum.
These are players that Leeds obviously have very high hopes for.
The Under-23s and the first-team are linked very closely at Leeds, much more so than most Premier League clubs, and it means the lure for players like McGurk is big.
And McGurk is another highly-rated prospect.
MOT Leeds News columnist Paul Robinson told us, “Buying players of the age and calibre of McGurk shows that Leeds have big plans for the future.”
He’s highly thought of at Wigan as well with coach Peter Murphy telling Wigan Today last March: “Sean was brilliant, he’s been amazing. He had a slow start to his scholarship with an injury in the summer but, since he’s been fit, he’s got himself into the team and stayed there.
“He’s so effective in games, he sets things up, he scores goals and he’ll always do that because of his ability.”
We’d love to see him sign for Leeds.
