'So stupid’: Phil Hay issues verdict after official ruling on key moment from Leeds win v Fulham

Phil Hay has branded Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic “so stupid” for his elbow on Leeds United defender Ben White at the weekend.

The Serbian escaped punishment at the time after crashing into the Elland Road loanee with his arm in the opening stages of Saturday’s 3-0 win.

But retrospective action has been taken, however, and the Championship top scorer now faces a three-match ban for his actions.

And Hay has thrown is support behind the ruling.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, The Athletic journalist said: “The right decision. No defence.

“What I don’t understand is why you’d do this. Eight games out from the end of the season, in the running for a top two finish.

“So stupid”.

We agree wholeheartedly with Hay here.

This was a shocking piece of play from Mitrovic, who had no intention of playing the ball, and every intention of roughing White up to put him off his stride early doors.

Clearly it didn’t work, of course, with the defender putting in as assured a display as we’ve come to expect from him, but there was a maliciousness from the Serbian that deserved to be reprimanded.

Thankfully, White was unhurt by the incident, but on another day, if the Fulham man catches him wrong, he could have been dealing with a nasty head injury.

In truth, Saturday’s result has probably put the top two beyond Fulham’s grasp anyway, with a seven point gap to make up in seven matches.

But even if it hadn’t they would be facing a huge uphill battle going into their next three matches without their main danger man – especially considering that one of those clashes is against promotion rivals Nottingham Forest.

This was reckless and unnecessary from Mitrovic, and it could come back to bite Fulham over the next few weeks.
