‘Sleeping giant’ – Hernandez recalls ‘unimaginable’ moment after four-year milestone at Leeds
Leeds United playmaker Pablo Hernandez has reiterated what makes the Whites a “sleeping giant” after their promotion to the Premier League.
The Spanish wizard played a massive part in Leeds’ success, even if it was in smaller cameo performances in the final 10 games after lockdown.
Hernandez used the pre-season tour of Australia when describing how big of a club Leeds are, claiming that the support was unbelievable.
The veteran playmaker joined Leeds four-year ago to the day on Saturday, and he celebrated that milestone in the perfect manner this season.
“When I arrived, they told me Leeds was a ‘sleeping giant’, and it’s true,” he told SuperDeporte, relayed by the Yorkshire Evening Post.
“I’ve been able to see what it means in England and abroad. We went to Australia in pre-season and the fanbase that crawled out was unimaginable.
“It’s great to be able to live all of this.”
The scenes in Australia were nothing short of unbelievable, but we all expected those fantastic levels of support up and down the country.
It was a disappointing end to last season after losing to Derby, and that reaction that the squad received only weeks later will have been the ultimate boost that those players needed to succeed in this campaign.
Hernandez has been pivotal to that. Compare his tears on the pitch at Brentford last season to the sheer delight after finding the back of the net at Swansea, and you could tell he wanted this more than ever.
We aren’t stopping there though, and Leeds are ready to push on and cement their spot back in the Premier League for years to come.
