Sky Sports share FA update on Leeds v Millwall accusations after FA Cup controversy

Leeds United were beaten 2-0 by Millwall in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday in a game marred by accusations of tragedy chanting by visiting supporters at Elland Road.

Sections of the away support were alleged to have made vile chants during the game, which resulted in Leeds and Millwall releasing statements after the game to condemn the actions.

A new update has now emerged from Sky Sports on the incident, which has drawn widespread condemnation.

FA liaising with West Yorkshire police after Millwall chants v Leeds United

Sky Sports provided an update on the controversy via their website (9 February) to confirm the FA is aware of the matter and police are now working with Leeds.

“Sky Sports News understands The Football Association is aware of the matter and will be liaising with Leeds and West Yorkshire Police,” they wrote.

Both clubs acted fast to condemn the chants, which have overshadowed a game that was a disappointing one on the pitch for Daniel Farke’s men.

Femi Azeez scored twice for Millwall to punch their ticket into the fifth round, but events off the pitch ended up overshadowing what happened on it.

No place for tragedy chanting

Put simply there is absolutely no place for this sort of thing.

It is one thing for supporters to engage in “banter” and try to create a good atmosphere inside stadiums, it’s part of football.

But there is a line you simply must not cross and tragedy chanting absolutely falls into that category, it is vile and absolutely unacceptable.

Millwall may have beaten Leeds on the day but after the chants heard from their fans it will have, rightly, taken the shine of what should have been a victory to be applauded.

Over the last few years, it’s felt like bans from football stadiums and teams have become more prominent.

A lot more is being said about situations such as this one that really put a dampener on the game.

Milwall even just beating Leeds in the first place should be the main story of the game but instead, it’s being overshadowed by a select few who thought they were better.

Leeds’ defeat against Millwall in the FA Cup allows them to focus on their fight to reach the Premier League but both matters were far from the mind after the game after what occurred.

Every fan needs to do their bit to ensure this sort of thing does not occur in the future, and it needs calling out on the terraces, online, and in the press when it does.

Credit for the swift action being taken and let’s everyone hope that any guilty parties are found and punished accordingly.
