Sky Sports share breaking Leeds United news as Diego Llorente pens new contract
Leeds United defender Diego Llorente has signed a new contract at the club today (23 December), as shared by Sky Sports News.
Julien Warren, the Sky Sports presenter, shared the breaking news on Friday reporting that the Whites player has got an “early Christmas present”.
He has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal that will keep him at the club until 2026.
“Breaking news. News of an early Christmas present for Leeds. It’s Diego Llorente, it’s a new contract with the club Leeds, just confirming in the last few minutes,” said Warren on Sky Sports.
“He has penned a three-and-a-half-year extension at Elland Road that will take him to the summer of 2026.”
Out of the blue
The news has come completely out of the blue.
Llorente has been really poor this season and he was not picked by the Spanish national side for the World Cup in Qatar. He has made seven starts in the Premier League so far and has been pretty average.
His performance in the 5-2 loss against Brentford and also in the 1-1 draw against Everton was horrible, and it comes as a big surprise that the club has decided to hand him a new deal.
Probably, it is an indication that Jesse Marsch wants an experienced head at the back, and sees Llorente as a vital part of the club.
Having said that, Llorente needs to improve his performance in the second half of the campaign. The club have shown faith in his ability, and it’s time for him to prove it.
He has this bad tendency to pick up freakish injuries which often keep him out for a while. Let’s hope the new deal will bring the best out of him.
