Sky Sports pundit warns that Leeds 19/20 signing may become frustrated
Sky Sports pundit Michael Brown has warned that new Leeds United winger Ian Poveda could become frustrated by his lack of game-time.
Poveda, 19, joined Leeds from Manchester City on a permanent basis in the recent January transfer window but is yet to feature for the Championship club’s first team.
He made the bench a couple of times after first arriving and has even appeared for Carlos Corberan’s Under-23s.
However Marcelo Bielsa is yet to call on the young winger, who has already dropped down the pecking order despite being at Elland Road for a matter of weeks.
Ex-Leeds player Brown has suggested that it won’t be long before Poveda is starting to demanding Bielsa for game-time in the senior side.
“I saw him the odd time for the under-23s at City,” Brown told Football Insider. “They really liked him, so he (Bielsa) did well to get him, probably, but again, he’s not used him.
“He’s got Poveda in, he’s got Augustin in but they’re not getting minutes.
“At some point Poveda will be saying: ‘I need to contribute, I need to have a run, I need to have a go.’ In those wide areas, will he change one of them?”
Poveda seemed as though he was ready and raring to go for Leeds when Bielsa named him on the bench for a couple of Championship fixtures.
However, with players returning to the side, the former Man City winger has since dropped out of Bielsa’s first-team plans and has been reduced to just playing for the Under-23s side.
Poveda is a young player who has just one senior appearance to his name in his career so far, so Bielsa is likely to think a first-team debut at Leeds would be too early for him right now.
Helder Costa’s not in the greatest of form in the Championship though so there could come a day before the season ends where Poveda gets a chance to shine.
He just needs to be patient.
In other Leeds United news, a journalist has called on the EFL to take action against the Whites for this recent announcement.
