Sky Sports pundit suggests Leeds fan fave wants new deal despite concerning report last month
Michael Brown has suggested that Gaetano Berardi will want to sign a new contract at Leeds United with his current deal set to expire in the summer.
Berardi, 31, is the longest-serving player that Leeds have at the club but a report by The Athletic’s Phil Hay last month suggested that could change in the coming months.
Although the defender’s current agreement expires at the end of the season, Hay reported on The Athletic website that no talks have been held about fresh terms for the Swiss ace.
As we’re now in March, it seems as though Leeds are ready to lose Berardi, who’ll celebrate his 32nd birthday in August and has only started 10 Championship games this season.
While Leeds might be prepared to let Berardi leave, Sky Sports pundit Brown claims that he, and every other player at Elland Road, will want to stay put because of the amazing fanbase and the mouthwatering style of football that’s being played under Marcelo Bielsa.
“Who would not want to be at Elland Road? I think everybody, it’s a great place to play, the support is sensational,” ex-Leeds player Brown told Football Insider when discussing Berardi’s contract situation.
“Everybody will want to try and be in that Leeds squad, the way they play football, that sort of feeling. I can’t see anyone not wanting to sign for Leeds United.
“It just depends on the manager, he obviously makes those decisions but they’ll all want to be at that football club.”
Berardi may be on the look-out for a new club in the summer, whether he wants to stay at Leeds or not because let’s face it, we can’t see the fan favourite being offered a new deal for the sake of it.
He’s been a great, if not hot-headed, servant for Leeds United Football Club and his role this season will be remembered for a long time if the Whites win promotion.
But, unfortunately, if he’s not getting much game-time in the Championship at the age of 31 then what are his chances in the Premier League at the age of 32?
We’d much rather see Berardi shine elsewhere than playing Under-23s football every week.
