Sky Sports pundit slams ‘awkward’ Leeds United ace Weston McKennie in loss v West Ham United

Alan Smith has slammed Leeds United midfielder Weston McKennie for his wayward effort in the second half of the clash against West Ham.

With the Premier League match at the London Stadium sitting at 1-1 early in the second half, Jack Harrison floated in a dangerous cross from the right.

The delivery was heading in the direction of Wilfried Gnonto, only for his Leeds teammate McKennie to take it away from him with a flailing header wide of the goal.

“McKennie was in no position really to have a go at goal here,” Smith said on Sky Sports Main Event (14:48pm). “It’s a really awkward angle.

“He needs to leave it, McKennie. He’s never going to test Fabianski there.”

Poor decision making

With Leeds in desperate need of points, Sam Allardyce simply won’t care about who scores his goals or how they come, but this attack was definitely wasted thanks to McKennie.

It really is all about decision making at this nervous stage of the season, and the American international certainly should have left the chance for Gnonto, who was in a much better position to find the back of the net. Instead, the opportunity was wasted and Leeds went on to concede to Jarrod Bowen not long after.

McKennie definitely wasn’t the only player in white culpable of making the wrong choice throughout the afternoon at the London Stadium, with several Leeds players failing to choose the most suitable option at various stages throughout the match.

A lack of composure has been their downfall for the majority of the season, with the Yorkshire outfit now looking very likely of dropping down to the Championship following yet another defeat.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are among the clubs in the hunt to sign one AZ Alkmaar ace, according to Mirror journalist Tom Hopkinson.
