Sky Sports pundit rages at Georginio Rutter for Leeds United incident v Swansea, slams referee

Danny Mills has been left in a rage at Georginio Rutter after an incident involving the Frenchman in the clash between Leeds United and Swansea City.

The Whites ran out 3-1 winners at Elland Road on Wednesday (29 November) thanks to goals from Joel Piroe, Dan James and Rutter, but Sky Sports pundit Mills was left irritated after the Leeds forward went down easily under a challenge from Bashir Humphreys.

Rutter won the foul on the edge of the penalty area, in a decision that left Mills enraged as he was in complete disbelief that referee Samuel Allison had fallen for his dive which he suggested belonged in a swimming pool.

Speaking on talkSPORT 2 (29 November, 20:56) he said: “It’s the slightest nudge, Tom Daley would have been proud of that. The way he throws himself to the ground, I mean the ref buys it but it’s a poor decision, to be honest.

“Slight contact, but such over-exaggeration with the dive.”

Striker’s performance

In the modern game, it doesn’t take too much for a player to win a free-kick and there is no doubt that Rutter used that to his advantage as he led the Leeds United line well against Swansea on Wednesday night, even if it didn’t win him many plaudits from Mills on commentary.

The Frenchman has been in electric form throughout the season and has been one of the Whites’ brightest attacking talents and that was the same on Wednesday night at Elland Road. Rutter caused the Swans’ defence a whole host of problems with his pace and power in behind.

His first-half goal wouldn’t have looked out of place in the Premier League as the 21-year-old brought Ethan Ampadu’s long ball down with a beautiful first touch before he slammed his strike past Carl Rushworth in the away side’s net.

When Leeds spent big to bring Rutter to England last January, they expected him to provide the goals to keep them in the Premier League and while he may not have managed to pull off that rescue mission he has started to prove his worth in England’s second tier.

Most Leeds United supporters will accept some Tom Daley comparisons from commentators if it means Rutter will keep finding the net.
