The path to Leeds United signing Dinamo Zagreb centre-back Josko Gvardiol has been cleared after it was reported that RB Leipzig have dropped out of the race for his signature.
Sky Sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claimed that RB Leipzig have now “stopped” their bid after Zagreb demanded £22.7m for the defender.
The Bundesliga side had made a bid of just £13.5m.
By contrast, Leeds haven’t given up and while they haven’t hit the steep valuation of the player, they have increased their offer from £17.8m [Soprtski Novoste].
Di Marzio claims, as was stated by Fabrizio Romano last night, that Leeds have now offered £19.9m plus a clause that guarantees Zagreb 20% of any sell-on fee.
Path clear for Gvardiol?
Every time Leeds seem close to sealing a deal for Gvardiol, something seems to shift.
Surely, this latest offer – and RB Leipzig pulling out of the race – will finally see the centre-back join up with Robin Koch and Liam Cooper at Thorp Arch?
There must be something very special about the player if Dinamo Zagreb value him at £22.7m.
At just 18 years old, he’s only played 13 games for the first team.
However, we aren’t going to argue with a scouting system that identified Ben White from League One and turned him into a superstar.
The loan deal with Brighton meant that the work with White will now benefit the south coast club, but White helped secure Leeds Premier League status.
If Leeds are convinced they have the next White on their hands then we can’t wait to see him at Thorp Arch and that’s the view of MOT Leeds News columnist Paul Robinson too.
He said, “You can be sure that Bielsa will have done his due diligence on the player. You don’t spend that sort of money on a player unless you’re absolutely sure of him.”
If Leeds are sure, then we’re sure too.
