Simon Jordan shares Leeds United and 49ers verdict in Premier League argument

Simon Jordan has namechecked Leeds United and Leicester today when the argument of parachute payments from the Premier League emerged.

After the Whites were relegated from the Premier League last season, Jim White shared they received around £44million to help them adjust to the Championship.

However, as per Sky News, an “emergency” meeting has been called by the Premier League to discuss a more equal distribution of funds throughout the football pyramid.

Speaking live via talkSPORT on Thursday (22 February, 11:12am), Jordan said: “The fact that Leicester, the Premier League champions, and Leeds United, who have got huge crowds, huge support, wealthy owners, and are able to sell some of their assets at the same time as manage their wage book.

“It’s not an argument about parachute payments. In real terms, it’s an argument about the distribution of money into the pyramid.

“If you increase the distribution so everybody gets more money in the Championship, League One and League Two, then of course, you can reduce the parachute payment because the disparity isn’t so wide.”

Leeds United could miss out on new Premier League deal

If the new deal is to go ahead, Leeds could potentially miss out on a share of a £925million windfall across the four divisions, with Premier League promotion becoming a much likelier option for the club.

For the Yorkshire side to benefit from this deal, they would need to stay in the Championship, something that Leeds would not aim to do.

Considering Jordan’s main point, that the parachute payments could be reduced if the distribution across the Championship, League One and League Two were more even, Leeds must claim promotion before any changes are made.

Sitting in second in the division, nine points behind league leaders Leicester, equal on points with Ipswich Town, and two points above Southampton, Leeds are in prime position to achieve that goal before any changes are made to their current parachute payments.

Of course, it is unlikely that their funds would be changed, even if they failed to get promoted and a new deal was put in place, as it would be highly unfair to strip them of promised money immediately.

Otherwise, Leeds and the 49ers would be in a very tricky situation.
