Simon Jordan delivers big boost to Leeds fans ahead of 20/21 Premier League
talkSPORT pundit and former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan believes that Leeds United fans will be allowed back into Elland Road this year.
Leeds fans missed out on their club getting promoted after the season was suspended and games eventually played behind closed doors because of Covid-19.
It’s been reported that the early rounds of the Carabao Cup could be used as test events to start getting football fans back into stadiums, albeit in reduced numbers.
And Jordan believes there is momentum to see this through into the Premier League.
Talking on the White & Sawyer Show (talkSPORT, Tuesday, 12.30pm), Jordan was asked if he thought fans would be back in Premier League stadiums before the end of the year.
Jordan said, “I think we will. To what level I don’t know but the motivation is there.
“I do think there’s momentum of testing and tracing and football looking at how it can get fans inside stadiums.
“The tests that are going on at the moment, the snooker stop-start where they had to get rid of fans and then they got them back in again.
“I don’t think it will be a gimme for football, but I do [think fans will be back in this year], yes.”
Fans deserve to be back
How tough was it for fans to miss out on Leeds getting promoted back to the Premier League for the first time in over 16 years?
Some fans were so distraught that they said they’d almost rather Leeds didn’t get promoted.
They were put right by the bulk of supporters but it shows the depth of feeling from fans who have followed the club all their lives.
Many pundits have said that the Premier League needs Leeds, including MOT Leeds News columnist Paul Robinson, and the prospect of getting fans back in, albeit in reduced numbers, is exciting.
It will come with its own problems. Leeds have sold out its season tickets and there’s a waiting list of 20,000 and counting.
Leeds could sell out Elland Road twice over and if a reduced capacity is put in place at Elland Road it will mean the club will have to decide how tickets are allocated.
That’s a good problem to have, though, and we imagine that all season ticket holders will get the chance to witness Premier League action this year, perhaps in rotation.
Even at a reduced capacity, Elland Road will be loud.
