'Should have been mouthwatering' - Pundit rants over what he expects from Leeds on Monday

ESPN pundit Steve Nicol expects to see a weakened Leeds United team at the Emirates on Monday when Marcelo Bielsa’s side plays against Arsenal in the FA Cup third round.

Most managers opt to rest key players after a busy festive period and hand chances to either youngsters or those on the fringes of the squad when the FA Cup kicks off for Premier League and Championship clubs.

And while Nicol understands why Arsenal would do it against Leeds – he cannot say the same about the Championship leaders.

“We can understand why Arsenal wouldn’t play their first team, but you know what? I bet you Leeds don’t play their first team. And to me that is just unreal,” said Nicol, as shown via ESPN UK’s YouTube channel.

“Yes, [they are] a side who are challenging and chasing to get in the Premier League, but what about all those years that Leeds United fans have been in the wilderness, turning up week after week? [Leeds are] one of the best-supported sides in the country, never mind in the Championship.

“How about you look after them for once? How about you try and give them something? But that’s not going to happen.

“They’re going to play a weakened side so you’re going to have a game that should have been mouthwatering [that] is going to turn into just another reserve FA Cup tie.”

What do Leeds fans want more than anything else this season? To win promotion to the Premier League by any means necessary.

If that means playing a fully rotated squad against Arsenal on Monday then so be it.

Former Liverpool player Nicol must have no clue about the squad depth issues that Bielsa has at Elland Road at the moment.

His side has had constant injury issues and there is a real shortage of strikers and central midfielders at the moment.

Why is it understandable for Arsenal to rest players? They’re doing nothing in the Premier League and might as well go for broke in the FA Cup.

Leeds have something massive to play for in their league so who can blame Bielsa for wanting to put all his eggs in one basket?

What a ridiculous rant by Nicol.

In other Leeds United news, Darren Bent is thrilled with Leeds’ link to a player who’d be a “clever” signing.
