'Shocked' – Phil Hay details what Cuisance was told by Leeds after deal collapsed
The Athletic’s Phil Hay has given the most detailed explanation as to why the Leeds United deal for Bayern Munich midfielder Michael Cuisance collapsed in dramatic fashion on Thursday.
Hay said that Leeds were ready to announce the player yesterday but that his medical showed an issue with one of his feet.
Hay claims that Leeds were still mulling over the move but pulled out on the advice of their head of medicine Rob Price.
He said that this news was relayed to Cuisance who was left “shocked”.
Writing in The Athletic Hay said, “The plan was to unveil Cuisance on Thursday. He took a flight from Munich on Wednesday and began undergoing a medical.
“Leeds were ready to meet his wage demands and finalise a long-term contract. They started putting together promotional material for his unveiling but the move came to a shuddering halt when scans turned up an issue with one of Cuisance’s feet.
“Leeds performed further assessments and weighed up the risk. After mulling the results over and taking advice from head of medicine Rob Price, they pulled out of the transfer.
“A shocked Cuisance received the news and returned to the airport.”
We feel for Cusiance
Marcelo Bielsa was asked about the Cuisance deal in his press conference on Thursday.
He said he didn’t want to comment until the player was signed as he wanted to avoid the possibility of another Dan James situation.
Given the timeline of the story it’s very possible that Bielsa knew something was up at this point.

You have to feel for Cuisance. The young player was on the brink of a dream move to the Premier League with the chance to develop under Marcelo Bielsa.
Instead, the news that he’s failed a medical has made the headlines across Europe. That’s very tough for a young player and he’ll be licking his wounds (metaphorically) this morning.
It could be tough for him to find a move anywhere else given what happened and it could be hard for him to reintegrate back into the Bayern Munich side after what’s been said.
He was already struggling for game-time there – this won’t help that at all.
