Senior Leeds United role for Charlie Cresswell on the cards amid transfer speculation

Charlie Cresswell “will be kept” in the senior plans of Leeds United next season, according to Leeds Live journalist Beren Cross.

The young centre-back spent last season on loan with Championship outfit Millwall and made 30 appearances in all competitions for his temporary club.

Cresswell, 20, was a potential candidate for another move this summer but amid the Whites’ relegation to the second tier is now reportedly in line for a significant role.

“Charlie Cresswell, who was at one point considered for sale in January, will be kept in United’s senior plans for next season after a promising loan with Millwall,” Cross wrote for Leeds Live.

“The 20-year-old came through some tough spells to be a key member of Gary Rowett’s side before a fractured eye socket ended his campaign in April.”

Bright future ahead

Cresswell definitely has a bright future ahead, with the young defender impressing at his temporary club last season.

He has proven his ability at the back, an area in which Leeds struggled massively this season as they were relegated from the Premier League.

Fortunately for the Whites, Cresswell now boasts plenty of experience playing in the Championship, with that experience set to be key in the club’s search for immediate promotion back to the Premier League.

Several senior players could leave Elland Road this summer, meaning the young players at the club will lose out on valuable leadership on and off the pitch, but they also look set to be handed plenty of minutes in the upcoming campaign.

Young defender Cresswell certainly won’t be the only youngster the Whites could rely heavily upon next season, but he would be a key one if he is one of the players entrusted with the crucial role of central defence.
