'Sending a message' - MOTD pundit hails Leeds pair who 'caused havoc' in 1-1 draw v Man City

Tim Cahil has claimed that Leeds United pair Rodrigo and Ian Poveda “caused havoc” against Manchester City on Saturday evening.

The Whites played out a pulsating 1-1 draw against Pep Guardiola’s men, and might have taken all three points on another day after creating a host of chances.

Both Rodrigo and Poveda started on the bench at Elland Road, but it was the former who offered the vital moment in front of goal for his side, capitalising on a rare Ederson error to tap in a spilled corner from close range.

And Cahill loved what he saw from the duo following their introduction after the interval.

Speaking on Match of the Day (Saturday October 3rd, 10.25pm, BBC One), the former Everton talisman said: “Rodrigo when he came on – and Poveda – they caused havoc.

“The reaction from Rodridgo, I was really impressed.

“I was really impressed with the way Leeds played. This is sending a message to the rest of the Premier League because teams are watching this and they’re saying ‘we need to adapt to the way they play’.

“It’s fantastic.”

Leeds United looked notably more assured in the second half against City, and it’s no coincidence that their improvement came at the same time as Poveda entered the action.

The nippy winger, who actually joined the Whites from City in January, was a fizzing bundle of energy, and he created so many problems for Guardiola’s side that the manager ended up withdrawing Benjamin Mendy and bringing on Nathan Ake in a bid to combat his creativity.

Likewise, Rodrigo looked really fired up when he joined the fray, and this was probably the best performance we’ve seen from him so far.

As per Wyscout, his shot accuracy, total action success rate, and xG were all notably higher than his season average, and it would appear that he is getting somewhere close to full match fitness.

When he does, on the basis of this showing, he will be a major asset for Marcelo Bielsa’s men.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites have agreed a £70,000-a-week contract with this potential new signing.
