‘Saviour’ – Joe Gelhardt praised by journalist Beren Cross

Leeds United youngster Joe Gelhardt has been labelled as the club’s ‘saviour’ by journalist Beren Cross for his performances in the first-team.

The young striker has come up to Marcelo Bielsa’s squad and made a big impact in the absence of Patrick Bamford and others, winning two penalties, scoring one and assisting one this season for the Whites.

After Leeds finally got back into the win column against Burnley at the weekend, there is a glimmer of hope for the Elland Road faithful that they can turn their season around.

While speaking on the Leeds Live Facebook live, journalist Cross heaped praise on the 19-year-old and his ‘incredible’ performances for the club since his promotion to the first team.

“The hype around this kid is just incredible,” he said.

“Obviously, we like to think that the club are managing him properly, that the coaches are keeping his feet on the ground – I’m sure his peers are keeping his feet on the floor, we know what his teammates can be like at that age.

“But in terms of the general reaction to this guy, I mean, it’s remarkable, isn’t it? I mean, the hype is incredible from what he’s done with the 23s.

“And every time he comes on now, it feels like he’s the saviour. And that’s a lot for a young lad to take on his shoulders.”

Super kid

While Leeds have had plenty of bad times this season, Gelhardt has been without a doubt one of the shining lights of their season.

The Whites have struggled to win games so far this season because they can’t put the ball in the back of the net.

Gelhardt hasn’t helped that exact problem too much, but his drive, energy and fearlessness has helped create a boatload of chances for the club and has given the fans a reason to believe.

With the future of the manager up in the air as well as the club’s position in the top flight, at least fans know that they have a starlet ready to give everything he can to help the club as much as he can.

Gelhardt is a super talented kid and is only going to get better. Leeds have found themselves a gem and need to get the most out of him to enhance their chances of survival.
