Executive Vice President of football operations at the San Francisco 49ers and current Leeds United director Paraag Marathe has said the “sky is the limit for Leeds.”
In an interview on NBC, Marathe was said to have “big plans” for Leeds and he claimed that Leeds could become a “big contender” in the Premier League, year-in, year-out.
“The sky is the limit for Leeds,” Marathe said.
“This is not a club where we made it to the Premier League and we are barely trying to hang on by the laces of our shoes. No. This is a club which can become a big contender year in, year out in the Premier League.
“We have a global fanbase and are one of the top brands in the world in any sport but the 49ers were falling on hard times. We rebuilt the franchise and that’s sort of where I saw Leeds the growth opportunity and direction they were heading in.”
49ers and Leeds a perfect partnership
The San Francisco 49ers already own a minority stake in Leeds and the club’s CEO Angus Kinnear revealed that the two sides were in talks over extra investment earlier in the summer.
Speaking in an interview with The Square Ball podcast, Kinnear said, “The question we’re asking now as we step up to the next level, what’s the level of funding required to get Leeds back to where we belong?
“We’ve got lots of people interested in the club now, the club is probably the most investable proposition in world football.
“The 49ers have been part of those conversations. Over the next 12 months, we’ll see further investment that will give Leeds the chance to kick on at the highest level.”
It does look like the 49ers are going to be the place that extra investment is going to come from for Leeds.
QSI have been linked strongly but it appears that they’re more interested in a total takeover, which isn’t what Andrea Radrizzani wants at the moment.
In a recent FT article, the financial paper reported that “one adviser to QSI said it continued to be interested in acquiring Leeds outright.”
The report also revealed that Radrizzani had turned down takeover offers but was interested in selling another minority stake. Our money would be on that being to the 49ers.
