Sam Byram shares update on Leeds United future
Sam Byram has admitted that he’d “love” to stay at Leeds United in the summer but doesn’t know what his future holds.
The 31-year-old is out of contract in the summer after his contract was extended by a year last summer meaning Leeds will have another choice to make.
The versatile full-back has made 21 Championship appearances this term as his side seek promotion back to the Premier League.
However, Byram has admitted he has little control over his next steps as he said on BBC Radio Leeds [quoted via Leeds Live, 9 January]: “Obviously, I’d love to stay here. But it’s not always in the control of the player.
“For this season my aim is to get Leeds promoted and whatever comes after that will come.”
Sam Byram can fight for his place at Leeds United
With Byram out of contract at the end of the season, the defender’s future could depend on which league Leeds find themselves in at the end of the campaign as, if promotion is gained, Daniel Farke may feel the need to upgrade his squad to adapt to the higher level.
Nevertheless, there is no reason the 31-year-old can’t get himself another year on his contract if he shows why he deserves an extension in the remainder of the campaign.
This season the defender has started 11 games and been used as a substitute in 10 matches showing he does still have something to provide to his side even if he is not a definite in the starting line-up each week.

However, whether his side go up or not, Farke could find himself losing players in the summer and Byram could be a useful player to provide squad depth again, as long as he can cope with the step up.
It’s clear the player is settled in West Yorkshire but as he says, the focus for now has to be promotion and once the Whites know where they are, it will surely make contract decisions a lot easier.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites are being tipped to sign this Nottingham Forest ace.
