Sam Byram shares new Leeds United contract admission as summer Elland Road exit mooted

Sam Byram has admitted that he would “love to” stay at Leeds United beyond the end of his current contract at Elland Road which expires at the end of the season.

The full-back returned to Yorkshire in the summer having been released by Norwich City at the end of the season and has impressed in Daniel Farke’s side, making 21 appearances as the Whites sit fourth in the Championship table.

Byram has still struggled with injury, however, and spent periods of the campaign on the treatment table. The 30-year-old is keen to extend his contract with Leeds but accepts that anything could happen in the future.

Speaking on the KageyVision YouTube channel he said: “I’d love to [stay here longer], me and my partner are very settled. It’s home, family and friends.

“It’s a huge club. I’d love to stay, you can never guess the future. I’ve just got to keep playing and see what happens.”

Tie him down

Byram has shown this season that when he is fit and firing, he is a real asset to Leeds United. The 30-year-old has arguably been the Whites’ most consistent fullback this season and is incredibly versatile being able to play on either flank.

However, keeping him fit hasn’t proved easy and in the opening 27 games of the season, Byram has only been able to start 18 matches, missing out on six matchday squads already.

The 30-year-old’s injury issues were well-documented before he made the switch to Elland Road this season and Leeds took their time before offering him a contract as they assessed whether or not he was worthy of taking a risk.

However, should Byram be able to maintain his fitness and avoid injury between now and the end of the season, Leeds will surely have to tie him down to a new contract. No matter whether the Whites are in the Premier League or Championship, the fullback will have something to offer to Farke’s side.
