Sam Byram ‘dream’ as behind-the-scenes reveal emerges from Leeds

Neil Redfearn has waxed lyrical about Sam Byram after he scored and helped Leeds United beat Luton Town 3-0 in the Championship at Elland Road on Wednesday.

Starting at left-back in place of suspended Junior Firpo on 27 November, the 31-year-old impressed Redfearn with his maturity.

He revealed that the defender was also a dream to work with during his time as the Whites manager and went on to tip his hat to him for deputising for Firpo “brilliantly”.

“He’s mature, he was always an absolute dream to work with, just an absolute dream”, Redfearn said on BBC Radio Leeds’ Football Forum [27 November].

“He’s all for the cause; he’d sooner his teammates get the limelight, and he’s one of them.

“I think he knows where his place is at this moment in time.

“He knows he’s probably not an out-and-out starter, he knows he’s going to get a game every now and again.

“When he’s needed he needs to be there and he’s fulfilling that role brilliantly.”

Sam Byram ‘dream’ as behind-the-scenes reveal emerges from Leeds

As Redfearn said, Byram, a right-back by trade, is aware that he is behind Jayden Bogle in the pecking order, with his first nine league appearances this season coming off the bench.

However, Firpo being suspended for three games has allowed the former West Ham man to start in those matches.

Daniel Farke playing Byram at left-back ahead of Isaac Schmidt is a testament to his hard work.

Having served his suspension, Firpo is likely to return to the starting XI when the Yorkshire outfit visit Blackburn Rovers on Saturday [30 November], but Farke will have no qualms about calling Byram on if needed.

Redfearn, meanwhile, knows all about the Thurrock-born player, having worked him during his time as the Leeds manager in the 2014-15 season.

Byram grabbed three goals and as many assists in 31 games for Redfearn that season and also appeared once for him in the 2012-13 season during an interim stint.
