Sam Bryam will be ‘absolutely gutted inside’ after Leeds United incident v Birmingham

Sam Byram will be “absolutely gutted inside” following an incident in the Leeds United game against Birmingham City on Monday (1 January), according to Aidy White.

Speaking on BBC Radio Leeds on Monday (via BBC Sport, 03:23pm), the pundit said it was “disappointing” for the 30-year-old as he was forced off the field on 18 minutes after picking up an injury.

He added that he was “gutted” for the left-back, who was replaced by Junior Firpo in the Whites’ 3-0 victory over the Blues at Elland Road.

“That’s disappointing for him, I hope it isn’t too bad and I wish him a speedy recovery,” said White. “He will be absolutely gutted inside and I am gutted for him.”

Can’t catch a break

It will have been incredibly disappointing for Byram to have to leave the field after picking up an injury with less than 20 minutes on the clock.

There were slight concerns around the Leeds academy product’s fitness after he made the switch back to Elland Road over the summer, having picked up a number of injuries over the past few years.

The left-back did, however, manage to play a consistent run of games in the opening few months of the campaign before his injury issues appear to have caught up with him a little over the past month.

The only positive to come out of the situation was that Firpo came on and looked bright in his absence, having set up Dan James’ goal against Birmingham.

Daniel Farke does have a few different players who can do a job at left-back, but Byram’s situation will be a concern for the Whites manager.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are targeting a Premier League ace as they prepare for a transfer blitz in January.
