Sam Allardyce makes new Georginio Rutter admission after Leeds United developments

Sam Allardyce has admitted he “couldn’t believe” Leeds United spent so much on Georginio Rutter during his time at Elland Road.

The French forward, who joined Brighton this summer, arrived at Leeds for a reported £35.5million in January 2023 only months before Allardyce was appointed to help the Whites avoid relegation [Sky Sports, 15 January, 2023].

Allardyce used the 22-year-old sparingly in the final games of the season as Leed were relegated and the former England boss has admitted the forward wasn’t good enough to play in the top flight.

Speaking on Undr The Cosh (9 September, 1:35:19) he said: “Because he wasn’t good enough. I just couldn’t believe they paid that much money for him.

“Under the circumstances, he was too young and coming in and playing in a struggling side in the Premier League was a lot to ask.”

How much did Leeds United get for Georginio Rutter’s Brighton transfer?

While Rutter more than proved himself in a Leeds United shirt during his time in the Championship, it is true that the Frenchman is yet to show he has what it takes to perform week in and week out in the Premier League.

Had the Whites won promotion under Daniel Farke last season, they would have almost certainly stuck with the 22-year-old in the number 10 position, but there is every chance he still wouldn’t have been good enough for that level.

Ultimately, that doesn’t particularly matter now as the forward is Brighton’s player and it is now down to the Seagulls to get the best out of him.

From Leeds’ standpoint, they can at least relax knowing that they got a reasonable fee for his signature.

Hopefully, the additions made to Farke’s squad in the final days of the transfer window will be good enough to help the Whites go one step further and return to the Premier League this term.

Winning promotion would of course be easier if Rutter was still a Leeds player, but it does feel as though the Whites have replaced their outgoing stars well this summer.
