Rumour Busters: Cahill will not be joining Leeds

Phil Hay – former Yorkshire Evening Post journalist and buster of rumours – has put a pin through the latest Leeds speculation.

Talk of Gary Cahill joining as a free agent had reached fever pitch online, with one leading bookie putting him as short as 4/11 to join Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

Cahill is without a club after his contract expired at Chelsea and plenty of Leeds fans were hoping the club would make a move for the 33-year-old former England international, especially after Pontus Jansson left to go to Brentford earlier this week.

Former Leeds man Noel Whelan stoked the fire this week when he said to Football Insider, “Leeds will be looking at him. I certainly would be if I was Marcelo Bielsa. He’d be perfect for us”.

And Football Insider went one step further saying that Leeds had been offered the Premier League veteran who wants a minimum two-year deal.

However, if that report got you excited, prepare yourself for disappointment – Cahill will not be signing for Leeds according to Hay.

He delivered the update on his personal Twitter account on Thursday morning.

It was always going to be an improbable signing. Cahill was on a massive £130k-a-week at Chelsea and Leeds couldn’t offer anywhere near that.

The club is currently trying to get Kalvin Phillips to sign a new deal. They’re reportedly poles apart but talks are ongoing.

The club’s current top earner is Kiko Casilla on £30k-a-week. Spending money on Phillips is what the fans want to see, not blowing the budget on a 33-year-old centre-back.
