Roy Keane fumes at West Ham United gesture before Leeds United game, ‘you draw the line’

Roy Keane is known at times for being a killjoy but his outburst at a harmless, heart-warming gesture by West Ham prior to their fixture with Leeds United on Sunday (21 May) was a bit of a chin-scratcher.

The Hammers’ players walked onto the London Stadium pitch for their final home clash of their Premier League campaign against strugglers Leeds at London Stadium accompanied by their children serving as mascots.

While most on social media enjoyed what was a quite a cute scene, Keane offered his usual grumpy take on things when speaking as a pundit on Sky Sports (01:26pm, 21 May).

“How many mascots can you have? It’s actually annoying me, that,” he said.

“No, you draw the line. You have a game. How many kids do you want on the pitch?”

Lighten up, Roy!

Roy Keane can be extremely insightful and when he speaks people tend to listen. Let’s face it, the man was walked the walk, and talked the talk in football – his voice clearly counts for something.

But for heaven’s sake, at times he really can be a parody of himself can’t he? And there is no finer example of that than in this instance.

It’s the end of the season, the Hammers are free of relegation, and there’s a feel-good factor in the air at London Stadium after they reached the final of the Europa Conference League on Thursday.

So, yeah they decided to capitalise on the good mood by allowing the players to bring their families onto to the pitch and create some memories that will last a lifetime.

Fair enough if the Hammers had not yet confirmed their Premier League status for next season but in a fixture that, for them at least, counts for very little then what’s the harm?

In other words, thanks for the viral content Roy…but lighten up!
