Rotherham chief Tony Stewart shares if new manager will be hired for clash v Leeds United

Rotherham United chairman Tony Stewart would be “amazed” if a new manager is appointed before the game against Leeds United on 24 November.

Speaking to The Yorkshire Post on Thursday (16 November), the Millers chief said he is looking to appoint an “established” manager after sacking Matt Taylor on Monday (13 November).

Stewart admitted that he has been “surprised” by the quality of some of the managers that have applied for the job, with former Whites boss Steve Evans amongst the names linked with taking over at The New York Stadium.

“We have had a sackful of out-of-work managers, in work and out of work (get in touch) and the response has been really good and there’s some talent in there,” said Stewart. “I am quite surprised, there’s some good quality names.

“We are looking at win ratios and not necessarily looking at guys that come in from the lower divisions to do this and that. I am looking for established Championship managers who have ‘done it.’ The quality is that good. The shortlist will be down to three or four, but we have half a dozen (leading contenders) in the bag and they are still coming in.

“It will maybe be after the Leeds match. I’d be amazed if there’s somebody in before Leeds.”

No rush

It sounds as though Rotherham certainly aren’t in any rush to make a new appointment as they prepare to face Leeds after the international break.

The South Yorkshire side are using this time to get the right person in place to help them fight off relegation as they currently sit 22nd in the Championship table and are five points from safety.

The Millers will be desperate to pick up points when they come up against the Whites, who will be looking for a victory themselves to pile the pressure on automatic promotion rivals Leicester City and Ipswich Town.

It looks as though Daniel Farke’s side will not have to contend with the new manager bounce that is often talked about unless Rotherham do manage to appoint someone before next week.

The Millers certainly shouldn’t be taken lightly either way, though, after they recently secured a 2-2 draw against Ipswich with an injury-time equaliser.
