Roma finalise details of Diego Llorente move from Leeds United, loan-to-buy on the cards - Sky Sports journalist

Roma are finalising the details of a “surprise” move for Leeds United defender Diego Llorente, with the Spanish international joining the club on a loan with the right to buy, according to Sky Sports journalist Angelo Mangiante.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano [30 January] shared the rather unexpected transfer news for both clubs on that AS Roma were closing in on a deal for the Leeds United defender.

The Spaniard has been a bit-part player under Jesse Marsch so far this campaign, making just seven Premier League starts and 11 in all competitions.

According to the Athletic journalist Phil Hay [30 January], the Whites are set to recoup at least the fee they paid for Llorente back in 2020, a big financial boost to the club board.

And now Mangiante has provided an update on Llorente’s proposed move to the Stadio Olimpico. Taking to Twitter on Monday afternoon [30 January] to announce the news, he tweeted:

“Surprise hit of Roma. The club is finalizing the details for the arrival of Diego Llorente from Leeds.

“The Spanish defender moves on loan with the right to buy until the end of the season. Work is underway to file the final details between the clubs.”

Good riddance

The Leeds hierarchy will be absolutely elated at the prospect of recouping some of the money they paid for Llorente back in 2020.

It was evidently clear the Spaniard was surplus to requirements under Marsch this season, with new signings Maximilian Wober, Liam Cooper and Robin Koch as his preferred options at centre-back.

This is a move which makes sense for all parties. The Whites getting rid of a player they don’t need, Roma bolstering their options at centre-back, while the player goes in search of a new adventure abroad.

With Marsch undergoing a stark transformation and revitalisation of the Leeds squad this year, it was almost guaranteed that the 29-year-old Llorente will be part of the Elland Road exodus following the departure of Mateusz Klich.

Good riddance.
