Rodrigo surely delighted after Luis Enrique news breaks after Leeds United forward snubbed by Spain
Rodrigo was extremely unlucky to miss out on the Spain squad for the World Cup – and the Leeds United forward could well have an international future after a major development on Thursday.
Nine Premier League goals were deemed to be sub-par by Luis Enrique, as he instead elected to operate without a striker in his side’s penalty shootout defeat to Morocco. Alvaro Morata was amongst the goals in Qatar, but he’s still not been consistent throughout his career.
There’s absolutely no doubt that Rodrigo should have been in the squad in Qatar, and if he had been, Spain would probably still be in the tournament.
However, Rodrigo will be glad to hear that Enrique has been sacked by the Spanish Federation (The Guardian’s Fabrizio Romano, 8 December) and has been replaced by Luis de la Fuente.
The under-21s boss has been involved in the national team system since 2013 and would’ve helped Rodrigo on his way to making his debut in 2014.
With the European Championships set to take place in Germany in 2024, there’s still hope for the Leeds United striker to make an impact for Spain.
Now that Enrique has left, he could well fancy his chances of breaking back into the national side, and if he continues his excellent form for the Whites, de la Fuente could be left with no choice.
With international resuming again in the new year, it will be good to see the Leeds forward back in the international set-up.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites are now scouting an attacker at the World Cup and a January move appears to be on the cards for them.
