Robin Koch shares 'crazy' Chelsea transfer verdict as figures thrown at Leeds United ace

Robin Koch has labelled Chelsea’s transfer spend as “crazy” after the Leeds United defender was quizzed on the level of expenditure in the Premier League.

The West London side spent £287million in the January window (Forbes, 1 March) in what was an extraordinary outlay from Todd Boehly.

Koch himself has been the subject of interest from Newcastle United (Sport, 6 March) in recent weeks and the German defender has since reacted to the immense transfer fees which are being dished out in the Premier League.

“The totals are crazy, of course, but to be honest I don’t care when I’m playing against this team [Chelsea],” said Koch (interview with Spox, 13 March).

Unbelievable

The transfer outlay by Chelsea in the January window was unlike anything we have seen before. The West Londoners invested in a long-term plan and are looking to completely dominate in the coming years. Manchester City are the benchmark – and it’s evident Todd Boehly is looking to set new heights.

It does make supporting a side that is outside the supposed big six quite tough. Is there really much hope for the rest of us? What is the end goal? The Elland Road faithful will hope the prospective 49ers’ takeover will potentially bridge the gap to the top half of the table – if Premier League survival is secured.

The enterprises’ move to take control at Elland Road has dragged on for far too long with the threat of relegation probably having a considerable impact. More clarity over the situation would be welcomed, but, for now, top-flight survival has to be the main aim.

In other Leeds United news, Javi Gracia completely undercut an increasingly embattled part of the Elland Road hierarchy with what he has said.
