Robbie Savage stunned by Leeds United hero Dan James as Wales beat Austria
Robbie Savage has picked out Leeds United attacker Dan James for his heroics with Wales on Thursday evening.
The Welsh got past Austria, winning 2-1 and leaving themselves one game away from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
James missed numerous chances on the evening, but Savage loves watching his pace in the final third as a central striker.
Writing in his latest column for The Mirror, Savage picked out James as one of those who has pushed Wales to success.
“There are other heroes who have taken Wales to the gates of Qatar 2022, notably manager Robert Page, who has done an outstanding job with brave team selection and rekindling the dragon’s fire,” he said.
“Aaron Ramsey’s quality, Daniel James’ pace, Joe Rodon’s temperament under siege, Ben Davies’ know-how, the list goes on and on.”
James may not have had the best of individual performances this week, but for the team, he was sensational.
As has often been the case this season at all levels, the attackers’ finishing was shocking, but all of his other work was out of this world.
James was outstanding yet again at getting the ball back and pushing world-class defenders such as David Alaba into making mistakes.
This is why there is such a debate around the winger, will he ever be able to get on the same level in his finishing? At this stage, it looks unlikely.
If he can hit 10 goals a season, though, he would certainly leave Jesse Marsch very happy, and he has eight more games to get six goals.
That most likely won’t happen now, but it has to be the goal moving forward, let’s hope he can bring those heroics back to Elland Road.
