Robbie Savage slams Kalvin Phillips as Leeds win v West Brom
Robbie Savage slammed Kalvin Phillips after the Leeds United midfielder ruined his side’s clean sheet against West Brom on Sunday.
Leeds were on course for a 3-0 win against the Baggies at Elland Road after he managed to grab his first Premier League goal with a free-kick in the first half.
However, the match ended on a sour note for the England midfielder as he lost concentration to gift Hal Robson-Kanu a goal in the late stages of the game.
Even though Leeds went on to win in what was a celebratory day at Elland Road, Phillips then found himself with what looks like a severe shoulder injury.
It remains to be seen whether or not that will endanger Phillips’ hopes of a call-up to the England squad for the European Championships this summer but Savage was less than impressed by the 25-year-old when he messed up for West Brom’s goal.
“I’m not sure why Phillips is looking at [Liam] Cooper,” said Savage on BT Sport 2.
“Phillips just doesn’t look at the ball, it goes under his foot.
“Good finish once again from Robson-Kanu.
“Look there, lack of concentration.
“Good finish, ‘keeper gets a touch to it. Consolation for West Brom.”
BT commentator Ian Darke then said: “That’s spoiled Kalvin Phillips’ day, hasn’t it? He got his first Premier League goal as well.
“They’ll be annoyed, the defenders and the goalkeeper, they won’t be keeping a clean sheet.”
Grim end to brilliant season
Phillips has been superb this season and has been one of the major driving forces behind an incredible first campaign back in the Premier League for Leeds.
He’s been wonderful in that deep-lying midfield role and although his goal was a bit of a fluke because it was an awful piece of goalkeeping by Sam Johnstone, he very much deserved it.
However, Phillips did not deserve the ending he had to that game.
The England midfielder totally switched off and allowed Robson-Kanu (of all people) to score and deny Kiko Casilla a clean sheet.
It was a smart finish by Robson-Kanu and he still had plenty to do but Phillips allowed him that opportunity by a poor piece of play.
Phillips then injured himself with a bad challenge on a West Brom player right at the death and he could cause himself to miss the European Championships.
It was a huge mistake for him to do that but we’re not going to criticise him too much – there’s no denying that Phillips regrets that challenge more than anyone.
Let’s hope he’s ok but Phillips looked in a lot of pain and he has a history of shoulder injuries.
That wasn’t the ending we wanted on Sunday.
