Robbie Savage in awe of Leeds United figure, he could do something ‘mind-blowing’

Robbie Savage has said that Leeds United winning promotion back to the Premier League would be “phenomenal” for one key man.

Daniel Farke‘s side sit two points clear at the top of the Championship heading into Monday’s six-pointer against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane; facing the side directly below them in the promotion race.

Leeds have been top of the pile for each of the last 11 rounds of matches, returning to the summit with their 2-1 comeback victory over Sunderland which saw them win it with the very last kick at Elland Road.

As a result, Farke and his players are in pole position to make their return to the top-flight after two seasons away, and after two previous promotions with Norwich, the German is eyeing up a three-peat.

Farke’s previous record with Norwich made him the best man for the job of getting Leeds back out of the Championship upon their relegation in 2023, and Robbie Savage thinks he’ll do just that this season.

Writing in his column for the Daily Mirror (21 February), Savage heaped praise on Farke, backing him to take Leeds back to the promised land and arguing the Whites make the Premier League a better place.

Savage said: “Daniel Farke is on course to win the Championship for the third time in seven seasons – a remarkable feat by any measure.

“To win the Football League twice with Norwich was phenomenal, but to add a third title with Leeds after coming so close to promotion last year would be mind-blowing.

“I’ve said it before: English football is a more vibrant landscape when Leeds are in the Premier League – it has the feel of a big club with a fantastic tradition and huge fanbase.”

Daniel Farke ready to make history with Leeds United

Savage’s assessment of Farke is even more remarkable when considering that of those seven seasons in which he could win promotion three times, three of them were spent outside of the Championship.

Farke may have failed to keep Norwich up in 2019/20 and was sacked by the Canaries in 2021/22, but there’s little doubt that when it comes to handling the Championship, he’s up there with the very best.

Prior to this season, Farke’s last three finishing positions in the second tier have been first, first and third; the latter resulting in Leeds still winning 90 points before losing to Southampton in the play-off final.

Doubts linger over his ability to navigate Leeds’ path to safety if and when they’re a Premier League team again, but for the here and now, there’s no doubting that United have a promotion specialist at the helm.

With the season’s home straight approaching fast and Leeds on course for the top-flight once again, Farke will further etch his place in Championship history as one of the league’s greatest ever managers.
