Robbie Savage and Chris Sutton clash over Leeds star Patrick Bamford

Robbie Savage has taken aim at Chris Sutton over his decision to pick Leeds United star Patrick Bamford in his Premier League Team of the Season.

Bamford, 27, struck his 15th goal of the 2020/21 campaign on Saturday in a 3-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Elland Road.

That goal means only four players have scored more in the Premier League this season, and Harry Kane is the only recognised striker of the quartet.

Sutton may have felt it was not a controversial decision to select the two highest goalscoring strikers in his team, but Savage still managed to pick apart his decision.

Sutton explained on BT Sport Score [15:20, 08/05/21], “Patrick Bamford has been integral for Leeds United.”

“He doesn’t play in a front two,” Savage hit back.

Sutton: “It doesn’t matter we’re talking about a Premier League ‘Team of the Season’ and that’s what that is.”

Savage: “Bamford and Kane don’t play in a front two.”

Sutton: “Bamford and Kane play centre-forward, idiot.”

Strange claim

Is Savage that desperate not to see a Leeds player in the Premier League Team of the Season?

Questioning Bamford’s inclusion just because he doesn’t play in a front two is just plain weird.

Barely any teams play a front pairing anymore, particularly the top teams.

Does that mean just one striker deserves to be recognised for their feats?

Furthermore, Bamford has seven assists to add to his 15 goals, so he’s certainly got more to his game than just lethal finishing.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been one of many plaudits of Bamford, labelling him as an “exceptional player” last month. [Liverpool FC club website]

We think at least one Whites player deserves to get into the Team of the Season, to recognise our achievements as one of, if not the, best newly-promoted sides ever.

The likes of Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips could also lay claim to having a chance, but Bamford is probably the most deserving given his ability to silence his critics and finally prove himself in the Premier League.
