Rishi Sunak reacts on social media after Southampton beat Leeds United in playoff final

Rishi Sunak has reacted on social media after Southampton beat Leeds United 1-0 in the Championship playoff final at Wembley.

Adam Armstrong’s first-half strike was the difference between the two sides on the day, sending the Saints back to the Premier League and keeping the Whites in the Championship for another season.

And Prime Minister Sunak, who is a Southampton fan, took to social media to join in the celebrations as Russell Martin’s men secured promotion.

He replied to Southampton’s official post announcing their promotion on his personal X account (26 May), writing: “We’re back.”

Southampton earn promotion at the expense of Leeds United

Leeds were second-best at Wembley despite starting the brighter of the two teams, failing to make the most of several promising attacks.

That wastefulness was punished when Will Smallbone slipped a pass in behind Ethan Ampadu for Armstrong, who arrowed a low strike into the bottom-left corner past Illan Meslier that would decide the game.

The Whites mustered just 0.64 xG and their xGOT (expected goals on target) of 0.46 serves to highlight the lack of quality to be found in their finishing on the day [FotMob].

Southampton, meanwhile, made more of their opportunities, recording an xGOT of 0.96 from chances with a combined xG of just 0.55.

Leeds must now go through it all again next season, while Southampton join Leicester City and Ipswich Town in the Premier League.
