Rio Ferdinand warns Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips from joining Manchester United
Former defender Rio Ferdinand has stated that it will be a big surprise for him to see Leeds United star midfielder Kalvin Phillips joining rivals Manchester United in the summer.
The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a move for the 26-year-old in the upcoming transfer window as a potential replacement for Paul Pogba who is set to leave the club at the end of his contract.
“I don’t think Kalvin Phillips is a name that should be associated with Manchester United,” he said. “I just think he’s a Leeds boy. The rivalry between the fans, his family are all there. It’s different to when I left, I had no family in Leeds other than my cousin.
“It wasn’t a problem for them. It was very different. I don’t see Kalvin Phillips going to Manchester United. If he does it will be the biggest surprise.”
Leeds United fans will be hoping that their star player will be listening to a Manchester United legend and stay at the club for years to come.
However, the future of the England international, who currently has a contract with the Whites till the summer of 2024, will be depending on a lot of things, including whether the club will be able to stay in the Premier League.
As things stand, Leeds are placed on the 18th position in the league table with just two matchdays to go.
Phillips is a Leeds academy product and was promoted to the senior team in the summer of 2015.
Since then, he has represented his current club in 232 matches across all competitions, scoring 14 goals and providing 13 assists.
In the ongoing campaign, the Leeds-born defensive midfielder has represented the Whites in 21 matches, including 18 in the Premier League, where he scored a solitary goal and provided an assist.
