Rio Ferdinand slams Kalvin Phillips for England display v Scotland
Rio Ferdinand has singled out Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips as one of England’s worst performers against Scotland.
The Yorkshire Pirlo and the Three Lions struggled all night and ended up faltering to a goalless draw at Wembley.
Ferdinand insisted that it was a shock after everyone was going “mad” for Phillips in the Croatia game only days before.
Speaking on the Late Night Vibe on YouTube, Ferdinand singled out Phillips as one of the worst performances on show at Wembley.
“Kalvin Phillips was joining the attacks in the first game, that’s why everyone was going mad about his performance,” he said.
“The timing to release himself, there was none of that today. We can put it down to a bad performance and that’s it, an isolated performance, the Czech game will tell us.”
Keep it quiet.
Ferdinand may be singling out the likes of Phillips, but it was Gareth Southgate who is to blame for this one.
He set up his team in the exact same way as the clash against Croatia and expected the same result, it doesn’t work like that.
You can’t expect Phillips to be charging into the final third every single game because that’s what he did against Croatia – it just doesn’t happen like that.
If we do the same against the Czech Republic, we will disappoint again, changes are needed, and dropping Declan Rice could be one of those.
The West Ham man hasn’t delivered much in these opening two games, and leaving Phillips as the holding midfield in the quarterback style could be perfect.
It allows England to utilise another attacking midfielder, so less of this rubbish being spouted by Ferdinand will be out in the media by next week.
