Rio Ferdinand raves about Tyler Roberts against Chelsea

Leeds United were held to a goalless draw by Chelsea on Saturday but Rio Ferdinand praised a key moment from Tyler Roberts.

The midfielder was a threat throughout – he had a goal ruled out for offside before hitting the woodwork and had a second-half shot saved by Edouard Mendy.

Roberts was lively with three shots in total [SofaScore] and Ferdinand was impressed with his audacious chip that looked like it would creep just under the bar.

He said on BT Sport’s coverage of the match, “He hasn’t really got into the game but this has been the best moment for Leeds, it’s a fantastic little, cute little, cheeky opportunity created.”

Point to prove

Roberts’ performance against Chelsea was his best since coming back into the side and he was rightly named man-of-the-match on BT Sport.

He played knowing he was under pressure to do well as Rodrigo was named on the bench waiting to take his place.

There was a determination in Roberts’ play and he looked to get forward and support Patrick Bamford as often as he could.

That ambition led to his strike which hit the bar and it was a marvellous piece of vision.

Bamford was forced off with an injury in the first-half and Rodrigo struggled to lead the line in his place.

There is a case for Roberts to take up the number nine role if Bamford is out, as the Welshman believes that is his best position.

He showed he is hungry to prove himself and with a bit more luck he would have won us the match.
