Rio Ferdinand hits back at ludicrous suggestion on Leeds star Kalvin Phillips

Rio Ferdinand has hit back at claims that Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse should have been selected by England ahead of Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips.

Stephen Howson, a well-known Manchester United fan, insisted that the Three Lions need more box-to-box midfielders and that he would dump the Yorkshire Pirlo.

That idea was quickly shut down, and Ferdinand was fighting in the Elland Road corner as he reacted to the England squad.

Howson was speaking on FIVE, Ferdinand’s live YouTube show discussing all the latest news from around the Premier League.

“He should have started for me,” he said. “James Ward-Prowse.”

Ferdinand hit back and insisted that one of his co-hosts was well out of line for making the ludicrous suggestion on Tuesday evening.

“Get out of your car, and just give your head a shake.”

“In front of who? So you would have Ward-Prowse ahead of Phillips? No, I’m sorry.”

Embarrassing.

So, according to Howson, Ward-Prowse should start because of his ability to take set-pieces, and nothing else.

Phillips, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Reece James can all take set-pieces, and Harry Kane will be on the penalties, so it isn’t as though we are desperate.

You have to think it is more of an anti-Leeds agenda starting this embarrassing claim, although Gareth Southgate looked past it.

Ferdinand has got back in touch with his Elland Road roots this season and has become a massive fan after his visit to Thorp Arch back at the start of the campaign.

Should Jordan Henderson not recover to 100% fitness before that first game against Croatia in a fortnight, it will likely be Phillips starting; something that will bring tears to some of our haters – unlucky.
