'Ridiculous' - Steve McManaman tears into one Leeds player in 2-1 win v Newcastle

Steve McManaman has blasted Leeds United ace Rodrigo and Newcastle defender Fabian Schar for an incident involving the two of them on Tuesday night.

In the second half of Leeds’ 2-1 win over Newcastle at St James’ Park, Schar went down clutching his face after being unintentionally hit in the mouth by Rodrigo.

Leeds’ Spain international then appeared to get in Schar’s face and say something while he was on the deck, prompting the Swiss centre-back to miraculously leap up.

Schar then got in Rodrigo’s face and the Leeds attacker fell to the ground before both players were booked by the referee.

Speaking on co-commentary, ex-Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder McManaman hit out at both players for their woeful theatrics.

“[Schar] was up quick enough there. Oh, and he’s (Rodrigo) fallen over as well,” said McManaman after the incident unfolded on BT Sport 1 on Tuesday night.

“Sorry, but you have to laugh at that. That is ridiculous from the pair of them, to be very honest.”

McManaman added: “I understand that but it’s the way Schar held his face and then jumped up really, really quickly and then that – it’s ridiculous from the pair of them.

“I get the fact that he got hit in the mouth but it’s the reactions afterwards.”

Embarrassing incident done and dusted

Football players really don’t help themselves when something like this happens.

Schar had genuinely hurt himself but to leap up the way he did just showed he was making the most of the injury to get some attention from the referee.

And then Rodrigo’s reaction to Schar getting in his face was simply laughable.

There were allegations that Rodrigo spat at Schar but thankfully, that has been rubbished with BBC Sport journalist Alistair Magowan saying that was not what happened and instead, something was said by the Leeds man to the Newcastle defender.

Lee Ryder, of the Newcastle Chronicle, has since added that the Magpies are not taking any action after the incident.

Both players were booked, both players made themselves look stupid and nothing extremely bad happened so let’s move on from the incident.

But, hopefully, Marcelo Bielsa will have had a quiet word with Rodrigo about that and tell him throwing himself to the ground in that manner is unacceptable. We don’t want to see Leeds players doing that.
