Richard Keys raises Elland Road point during live Everton v Man United coverage

Richard Keys used Leeds United home ground Elland Road as an example during beIN Sports’ live coverage of the Premier League draw between Everton and Manchester United on Saturday.

The Toffees were playing host to the Red Devils during a game in which David Moyes’ men were on top for most of the 90 minutes.

The 2024/25 season is going to be the last time that Everton play their home games at Goodison Park so it feels like this campaign means more.

This is where Keys brought Leeds into the conversation, as both teams’ stadiums are fairly old-fashioned and hold the same core values as one another.

This is also why for many fans on the blue half of Merseyside, as well as others such as journalists, the 2024/25 campaign is set to be a fairly emotional one.

Keys drops Elland Road and Goodison Park comparison

Leeds have played at Elland Road since the West Yorkshire outfit’s formation back in 1919.

It’s a staple of English football and is one of the oldest stadiums where a team in the English pyramid still plays their home games.

Speaking live on beIN Sports while talking about Saturday’s game between Man United and Everton being the last one held at Goodison Park (22 February, 12:29pm), Keys shared his thoughts on Elland Road and Goodison Park.

“Leeds at Elland Road shares all the same memories [as Goodison Park]. It is one of the last original footballing arenas, it really is,” he said.

Leeds United have a fortress in Elland Road

One of the most important things about the West Yorkshire outfit is the atmosphere they can create on a matchday when playing at home.

The 37,000+ seater stadium is one of the most iconic in the country and if you mentioned its name to almost any football fan, they’d instantly be able to tell you which team plies its trade there.

The 2024/25 term has been no different, either, with Daniel Farke managing to turn Elland Road into a fortress once again.

Farke has led his men to 14 home wins in the Championship, most recently a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sunderland, and with the current purple patch of form they’re in, it feels nigh-on impossible to see them not earning promotion to the top flight.

That will be especially true if they beat Sheffield United on Monday evening.

Of course, this is mostly down to the stellar performances of players such as Joe Rodon, but without the German at the helm, the Whites would likely be much worse off.

Only time will tell what the future holds of course but, at the moment, there isn’t a team who seems to be capable of knocking Leeds off the top spot.
