Richard Keys questions ‘outrageous’ suggestion, makes C’Ship claim about Leeds & WBA
Richard Keys believes it would be outrageous if Leeds United and West Brom were to be promoted even if the season was to be suspended.
With the Coronavirus having postponed all football in England until the start of April atleast, there have been suggestions that there could be a 22-team Premier League next season.
That would mean that Leeds and West Brom would earn promotion without having to play there final nine games if the suspension was to be extended.
Keys claimed that would be ridiculous should the likes of Fulham and Nottingham Forest in the chasing pack to miss out this season.
“Leeds and West Brom have had eventful seasons, but they’re not up yet. Both can still be caught,” he wrote in a blog post.
“So how can we promote them? It would be outrageous if those chasing play-off places were to miss out on the chance to get up. Bristol City, Millwall, Cardiff are all jockeying. So are Blackburn and Swansea.
“It’s one of the joys of Championship football that very little is ever settled until the last day of the season. Oh – and the football is pure. No VAR spoiling matches.”
Leeds and West Brom fans would clearly disagree, especially given the fact that those two sides have been in the automatic promotion spots together since the first day of the season.
If you look at the prediction of expert Nate Silver on FiveThirtyEight, the 22-team Premier League may make sense. Leeds and West Brom are the only teams with a chance above 1% of winning the title, with the Whites currently having a 98% chance of promotion.
People may not like it, but suggestions are welcome – this one may be outrageous, but after nearly two decades away, Leeds need Premier League football next season.
