Richard Keys delivers verdict after what happened ahead of Leeds United v Brighton

Richard Keys believes that the BBC did not care about Ian Dennis who was made to work during the Leeds United v Brighton game on Saturday, 11 March.

As a number of former players and employees decided not to cover any games in solidarity with Gary Lineker, Dennis attend the Elland Road clash to commentate on the game which ended 2-2.

It’s understood that there was “chaos” before the game as to how the coverage will be shaped and Conor McNamara decided to step down from co-commentary, leaving Dennis the only one to report on the game. [The Athletic]

Keys wrote, “Senior football commentator Ian Dennis felt it was his duty to carry on working [Leeds v Brighton], but he was pilloried on social media for doing so. What about his right to make choices? The beeb didn’t seem to have too many concerns about him. They hung him out to dry.”

Tough on Dennis

He cannot really be blamed for covering the game as he does not have the recognition of Lineker and all the other high-profile names who boycotted the BBC’s requests.

They feature on multiple platforms and not showing up for one weekend is not going to be the end of the world for him.

In defence of Dennis, we think he did a good job of covering the game and it was a contentious call so doing it knowing that he would face backlash is commendable.

Leeds United

It’s good to see the BBC now bowing down and we expect them to make a few changes to their policy as the current one is ludicrous to say the least.

Leeds picked up a point at home against one of the in-form teams in the league and while that is something to celebrate, they may have wanted three from this one.

Hopefully, they beat Wolves and head into the international break in a more comfortable position than they are currently.
