Brighton are proving a rich breeding ground for talented young centre-backs and while the one Leeds United fans really want to see at Elland Road next season is Ben White, his future is still up in the air.
Meanwhile, Leeds are getting their ducks in line and looking at alternatives.
According to Mike McGrath in the Telegraph, one of them is another young centre-back from Brighton, 18-year-old Haydon Roberts.
Roberts has already made his senior debut, playing 90 minutes for Brighton in the EFL Cup against Aston Villa last September.
That was a bittersweet affair for Roberts who scored on his debut but went down to a 3-1 defeat.
As well as Leeds, Brentford, Derby, RB Leipzig and Mainz have also been credited with an interest, with the Bundesliga sides sending scouts to watch him for Brighton Under-23s.
Roberts and White? Yes please
Roberts has got a knack for scoring goals.
He scored on his home debut for the Brighton Under-23s against Man City, with his side coming out on top of an impressive 5-0 scoreline. And is one-for-one in the senior side.
Roberts hasn’t had any Premier League experience but he’s got 20 caps for the England youth side and has plenty of games behind him at Premier League 2 level.
The Secret Scout in the Daily Mail gave him a very positive write-up in March of this year, in an Under-23s game just before the season was suspended.
This part was the most fascinating: “It was his reading of the game that impressed me most. He maximised his passing and assessed situations quickly. When it needed a longer clearance, he showed a good range, but never attempted the Hollywood ball. He looked a leader despite being one of the youngest on the field.”
He’s also compared to White in the Telegraph report – an exciting prospect that could see Leeds pick up a real bargain.
Roberts would likely be for the Under-23s at first but he doesn’t sound like he’s too far away from playing at senior level.
A double deal for White and Roberts? Now you’re talking.
